Florence Simmons Memorial Awards for School of Performing Arts Students

Description: Florence Simmons passed away in June of 2014 in her 100th year. Florence grew up in Charlottetown and attended Prince of Wales College in the 1930s, graduating with honours at the age of 19. After graduation, Florence was employed by an insurance company, and then obtained work with the Bank of Nova Scotia in Charlottetown. She learned to play the piano as a young girl, and her creativity was also expressed through drawing, sketching, and painting. Given her love of the arts, Florence named the Holland College Foundation in her will, benefiting the College’s new performance hall, as well as student financial aid for students attending the School of Performing Arts.

Criteria: Applicants must be entering their first or second year of studies in the Music Performance program. Applicants must submit a short essay describing why they are choosing to enroll in the Music Performance program and what they intend to do after graduation. The award has a merit component which will be based on audition results (audition results are housed in the Registrar’s Office (you are not required to submit these with your application).
