Dr. Trevor Jain grew up in Nova Scotia and joined the Canadian Armed Forces as an infantry soldier while in high school. He received his MD from Dalhousie Medical School where he was planning to become a plastic surgeon. In 1998, his future changed. He was seconded by the military and, at 28 years of age, was the youngest person on the team to design, set up, and run the morgue as the pathology operations for the Swissair disaster. In 1999, Dr. Jain was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal of Canada by the Governor General for his efforts. In 2018 he received the Governor General’s medal a second time: this time, the Order of Military Merit, one of the country’s highest honours, for his leadership in crisis situations throughout his career.
Through his continued education and experiences, Dr. Jain realized he liked, and thrived, in emergency medicine, the unknown, the chaotic environment, and solving problems. This set him on a path to becoming one of Canada’s leading experts in disaster medicine.
In 2008, Dr. Jain joined the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown as an attending emergency physician. He also served as the medical director for Holland College’s Paramedicine Programs and was the driving force behind the creation of UPEI’s Bachelor of Science in Paramedicine degree program in 2017. His experience and passion for medicine, along with his ability to lead others during a crisis, helped his work with Health PEI to shape, and continue to shape, PEI’s pandemic response.
In 2021, Dr. Jain concluded his formal role at Holland College. To honour his significant contribution to the advancement of Paramedicine programming at Holland College and throughout the Atlantic Region, as well as his leadership in the healthcare industry, the college established the Dr. Trevor Jain Award for Leadership in Paramedicine.
Commencing in 2026, a $1,000 entrance award will be available to deserving students entering Holland College’s Primary Care Paramedicine or Advanced Care Paramedicine program.
