Government of PEI, Department of Public Safety and Justice
The Department of Justice and Public Safety (JPS) prioritizes a community policing approach in the delivery of policing services. Community policing promotes organizational strategies that support the systematic use of partnerships and problem-solving techniques to proactively address the immediate conditions that give rise to public safety issues such as crime, social disorder, and fear of crime. Community policing relies on representation from, and engagement with, the community it serves.
An over-representation of racialized and Indigenous populations in the justice system, coupled with their under-representation in the administration of justice, also contributes to lower confidence in the justice system. JPS is committed to ensuring that policing services in Prince Edward Island (PEI) be inclusive and reflective of its diverse community to better support community safety and well-being.
The 2021 Speech from the Throne outlined Government’s commitment to fund seats at the Atlantic Policy Academy for underrepresented groups and visible minorities. This JPS grant provides further potential funding for underrepresented populations in PEI seeking post-secondary education in policing services.
