W. Garfield Weston Awards of Excellence for Aspiring Tradespeople

Description: The W. Garfield Weston Foundation has established The W. Garfield Weston Awards of Excellence for Aspiring Tradespeople at Holland College to support students at Holland College undertaking a 1 or 2-year skilled trades program. Recipients will receive a $2,500 stipend to be used either for tuition or living expenses, payable in two instalments of $1,250 each in January and March. Recipients will also receive a $2,000 Holland College tuition credit. Students who continue on to their second year of study can apply to renew the award and must have been a WGW recipient in their first year.
Criteria: Open to Prince Edward Island students* in their first year of a two-year trades program (Aircraft Gas Turbine Engine Repair and Overhaul Technology, Automotive Technology, Carpentry, Commercial Diving, Electrical Technology, Electromechanical Technology, Energy Systems Engineering Technology, Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning Technology, Heritage Retrofit Carpentry, Plumbing, Power Engineering, Precision Machinist, Steamfitting / Pipefitting, Welding Fabrication, Welding Level 1, Wind Turbine Technician, or Wood Manufacturing Cabinetmaking) are eligible to apply. Applicants will be assessed on the basis of financial need and commitment as an aspiring tradesperson. Students must apply for the award. Applications to include a personal statement outlining why the applicant feels they should be selected for the award, what influenced them in pursuing a career in the trades, what their goals are, etc., along with a letter of support from their Holland College instructor. Applicants may be asked to participate in a brief interview process. Students who continue to their second year may apply for renewal and must have been a WGW recipient their first year of study.
